Welcome to Year 4
In Year 4, we strongly encourage the children to be more independent, resilient learners throughout the whole curriculum. We use a range of resources and media to excite and inspire children in a range of topics.
We follow a two week cycle in English leading up to an independent piece of writing. The children use videos and texts as a hook for their writing. They build up to this by sentence work and looking at key features. We have a strong focus on vocabulary and encourage the use of dictionaries and thesauruses to find meanings and synonyms of new words.
We have daily reading sessions which focus on basic skills and reading comprehension. The children complete different activities each day building on their reading skills.
In Maths, the children are encouraged to be independent, thinking of ways to solve problems and apply their maths knowledge in a range of ways. Children complete 10-minute arithmetic challenges daily, which involve the four key areas in maths; addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Year 4 are strongly encouraged to learn and continue to practise the times tables and have Times Table Rock Stars available to them.
Additionally, children will complete a spelling test weekly. Please continue to support your child at home with their reading and spellings practice as this really does make a difference!
