Welcome to Year 3
In Year 3, we strongly encourage the children to be more independent, resilient learners. We use resources such as cornerstones to excite and inspire children in a range of topics, to build up to our extended writing.
We follow a three week cycle in English leading up to an independent piece of writing. The children learn a text linked to their topic through oral recital daily. Following this, they identify key features and use these in their writing. We have a strong focus on vocabulary and encourage the use of dictionaries and thesauruses to find meanings and synonyms of new words. To support their writing children have SPaG lessons; ensuring they are confident in a range of skills.
We have daily reading sessions using based on a variety of novels. We follow a two week cycle allowing children to work on a number of reading skills such as inference, predicting, sequencing, clarifying and evaluating.
We will continue to use Inspire Maths to maintain high expectations of our children's mathematical abilities. Children are encouraged to be independent, thinking of ways to solve problems and apply their maths knowledge in a range of contexts. Children complete 10-minute arithmetic challenges daily, which involve the four key areas in maths; addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
Additionally, children will complete a spelling test weekly. Please continue to support your child at home with their reading and spellings practice as this really does make a difference!
