How We Learn

At Adderlane we have one Nursery class and one Reception class.

Nursery
We welcome children into our Nursery from their 3rd birthday. We offer 15 hour and 30 hour places (subject to eligibility). Our day consists of short bursts of adult-led learning, such as practical number sessions, with a huge focus on child-initiated play indoors and outdoors.

For the children attending Nursery on a 15-hour basis, our day begins at 8:50am and ends at 12:00pm.
For the children attending Nursery on a 30-hour basis, our day begins at 8:50am and ends at 3:10pm.

Reception
We welcome children from our Nursery and other surrounding providers. Our days consists of a balance of adult-led learning, including phonics and maths, as well as a continued focus on child-initiated play indoors and outdoors.

Our day begins at 8:50am and ends at 3:15pm.

At Adderlane, we value play as we know that is how our children learn best. They are encouraged to join in all activities, to be independent and to make choices. Within Early Years we offer a rich and varied curriculum in a safe but inviting learning environment. We understand that children develop at their own pace, but with encouragement and opportunity they will reach their full potential. All of our Early Years staff are committed to keeping your child happy and safe. Staff are there to guide, teach and get to know both yourself and your child during your time in their class. At Adderlane we were Early Adopters of the new statutory reforms - it meant we got a head start on on following the new Development Matters to plan and deliver exciting learning to your children. These documents have Prime Areas of Learning and Specific Areas of Learning.

Prime Areas of Learning: Communication & Language, Physical Development, Personal, Social & Emotional Development
Skills within these aspects of our curriculum are fundamental to future learning and are our main focus, particularly in Nursery.  We follow a framework called 'Launchpad for Literacy' which is embedded in our planning, delivery and provision. Launchpad for Literacy supports staff to ensure children make progress and that any gaps in learning are identified and filled. Nursery homework is usually an activity related to Launchpad for Literacy to support parents with understanding how they can support their children at home.

We continue to focus on prime areas of learning in Reception to ensure children will be ready for more formal learning, such as Literacy and Maths.

Specific Areas of Learning: Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World, Expressive Arts & Design
These aspects of learning include essential skills and knowledge. Progression over the year will ensure our children in Early Years are well prepared for their next year in school. Reception homework is usually related to Literacy and Maths, this enables parents to be aware of what we expect from our children.

We also understand how important it is to follow your child's interests through learning opportunities in our environment - this is when children learn best as they are enthusiastic and engaged. Through this, we evaluate Characteristics of Effective Teaching and Learning and use our expertise to effectively plan next steps to move learning on in an engaging way.

Parent Partnership

  • We use Class Dojo as a way to keep in touch with parents - please make sure you check it regularly for any important messages. Also, feel free to contact your child's class teacher directly over Class Dojo.
  • Parents are encouraged to monitor their child's online learning journal through the Evidence Me app. It's a fantastic tool! We really value parent observations too - remember to upload photos from home on to Evidence Me.
  • We hold Stay and Play events every half term - we love inviting our families into school so they can see what we are learning.
